Unrequited love is one of the most special emotions of love. It is when a person's heart is directed towards someone with all its sincerity, yet that affection is not reciprocated in the way they desire. Some experience unrequited love for only a few months and then forget about it, but there are also those who carry that emotion for many years; even when it has taken deep root and they know the outcome may never change, they still cannot bear to walk away.
In life, unrequited love exists in many different forms. There are one-sided loves that are eventually reciprocated, where the two step toward each other and continue the unfinished story. There are also cases where that affection never receives an answer.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking case is when two people have been close friends for many years. From daily conversations, small gestures of care, and moments experienced together, one person gradually develops feelings that cross the boundaries of friendship. Yet, they lack the courage to confess. It is not because their feelings are not strong enough, but because they fear that just by speaking up, that inherently beautiful relationship will no longer be the same. They fear the awkwardness, fear the distance, and above all, fear losing the person they always cherish.
There are also those who love someone they cannot love. It could be because the other person already belongs to someone else, it could be because circumstances do not allow it, or simply because there exist unfillable gaps between them. They understand this better than anyone else, but the heart does not easily listen to reason. The more they try to forget, the clearer that figure appears in their mind. Wanting to leave but unable to bear it, "what if I have a chance?" "what if they also have feelings?"... so many "what if" questions are evoked in their hearts, making them unwilling to walk away.
So why is it possible to have an unrequited love for many years without being able to let go? Perhaps because people do not just love a person, but also love the memories, the hopes, and the things that have never happened. Sometimes, what makes people linger is not the present, but the beautiful vision they once imagined. They know they cannot take another step forward, but they are also not strong enough to turn their backs and walk away.
Many years of unrequited love is like standing at a crossroad with no way out. Moving forward is impossible because it cannot be spoken, but leaving is hard to bear because the feelings are still there. Outsiders might think that simply letting go is enough, but for the person involved, letting go of someone who has appeared in their youth has never been an easy thing to do.
