Comparing Yourself to Yourself Instead of Others
Comparison is something almost unavoidable in life. Ever since childhood, many people have grown accustomed to the saying: "Look at someone else's child!". It could be Mrs. A's child who studies better, Ms. B's child who is more obedient, or a certain older sibling who is more successful. When we go to school, we again face pressure from the grades and achievements of our peers. When we start working, comparison continues to appear through salaries, positions, or the capabilities of our colleagues. It seems that at any stage of life, we can become the subject of comparisons.
However, that is mostly the comparison others make of us. As for ourselves, it is more important to learn how to reduce looking at the success of others to pressure ourselves, or looking at the failure of others to become negligent and irresponsible towards ourselves. Everyone is born with their own starting point, circumstances, abilities, and path. Therefore, using other people's lives as a measuring stick for ourselves is sometimes unfair.
Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Are you more hardworking today? Are you more mature? Do you know how to fix your own shortcomings? As long as you improve a little each day, no matter how small, that is already progress.
