Many students find their full personal information exposed when searching their student ID on Google: Potential risks of lax data security
In the era of booming digital technology, looking up academic information online has become familiar to students. However, recently, many students were surprised to find that simply entering their student ID number into Google could yield a series of related personal information. This is raising concerns about personal data security in the educational environment.
There are many cases showing that when searching for a student ID on Google, the returned results can include full name, date of birth, phone number, permanent address, hometown, class, major, email, and much other information. This data, which should only be stored within the school’s internal management system, has inadvertently appeared publicly on the internet.
Such exposure of personal information harbors numerous risks of being exploited by bad actors. From the collected data, scammers can impersonate school officials, authorities, or recruitment agencies to commit fraud. Many individuals also use personal information to create fake accounts, take out online loans, steal identities, or carry out other sophisticated forms of cyberattacks. At the same time, students should regularly check their information on the internet, proactively request the removal of unnecessary data, and raise their vigilance against calls and messages showing signs of a scam.
