The dark side of online dating: What's behind those sweet messages?

The boom in digital technology has redefined how we search for love, with virtual spaces becoming a bridge connecting millions of lonely hearts.

Yet behind the dazzling interfaces and streams of sweet messages lies a deeply troubling reality. Perfect profile pictures, caring check-ins, and nightly goodnight messages do not necessarily come from a sincere heart. They may instead be part of a carefully scripted scenario designed to lure victims into a sophisticated web of scams.

The greatest fear for users of dating platforms is not rejection, but realizing that they have developed feelings for someone who does not actually exist. The use of fake images and identities to deceive others is becoming increasingly widespread and serious.

To weave the perfect romantic trap, cybercriminals often create highly idealized profiles. Men may pose as engineers, successful entrepreneurs, military personnel, or doctors working overseas, while women may present themselves as attractive, glamorous, financially independent individuals.

By using stolen photos from accounts belonging to people in other countries or exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) to generate remarkably realistic faces, fake accounts can easily lower victims' defenses at first glance. More alarmingly, with the help of next-generation deepfake technology, scammers can now imitate voices and even conduct short video calls with natural facial movements to reinforce their victims' trust. This preprogrammed "perfection" exploits the human desire for love and affection, leading victims to believe they have found their soulmate without realizing they are interacting with an organized emotional manipulation scheme.

Initially, victims are showered with attention, flattering compliments, and beautiful promises of a happy family life after just a few days of conversation. Those behind fake accounts often appear to be attentive listeners, repeatedly expressing deep empathy for victims' past emotional wounds. This encourages victims to lower their defenses quickly and become emotionally dependent.

Once the emotional bond has grown strong enough, the scam enters its climax with sudden, life-changing "emergencies." The perpetrator may claim to have been involved in an unexpected accident, have a seriously ill family member, have a bank account frozen due to legal procedures, or urgently need money to resolve a business matter.

Another common variation in Southeast Asia involves luring victims into cryptocurrency investment platforms, fraudulent financial apps, or betting websites controlled by the scammers themselves. Blinded by trust and love, many people are willing to drain their savings or even borrow money from multiple sources to help their "loved one," without suspecting anything is wrong.

Online romance scams are no longer distant cautionary tales. They have become a serious problem, causing enormous financial losses. According to cybercrime statistics in Vietnam, online scams involving fake identities and sophisticated technology have caused substantial damage, contributing to estimated losses of tens of trillions of Vietnamese dong across cyberspace in recent years. In cases uncovered by law enforcement, some victims have reportedly lost hundreds of millions or billions of dong, with losses reaching nearly VND 9 billion in some instances after developing romantic relationships online over a relatively short period.

However, financial wounds may eventually heal with time, while the psychological devastation can leave the deepest and most lasting scars. When the mask finally comes off, the scammer disappears with the victim's money, leaving them to face an overwhelming psychological shock. They may experience panic, a collapse in self-esteem, depression, and a complete loss of trust in other people and in love in real life. Being betrayed by someone they once loved wholeheartedly and trusted with their deepest feelings can cause unbearable pain that no amount of money can ever make up for.

To avoid becoming the next victim in the trap-filled world of online dating, it is essential to develop a healthy degree of skepticism. The first golden rule is to verify the other person's information. You can use Google's reverse image search to check whether their profile pictures have been stolen from celebrities' accounts or those of popular internet personalities.

A clear warning sign is when someone repeatedly finds excuses to avoid meeting in person or refuses to participate in extended, live video calls, claiming that their camera is broken, their internet connection is poor, or their job requires strict confidentiality.

In addition, establish an absolute financial boundary when dating online. Never transfer money, make payments on someone else's behalf, purchase prepaid phone cards, or invest in any financial scheme at the urging of someone you have never met in person, no matter how moving or urgent their explanation may sound.

Remember that someone who genuinely loves and respects you will never put you in a financially difficult position or ask you to risk your assets for their sake when the relationship exists only through messages on a phone screen.
