For decades, a university degree has always been considered the exclusive "ticket" to enter the labor market and ensure a stable future. However, the explosive growth of the internet, social networks, and especially artificial intelligence (AI) is shaking this monopoly. A young generation growing up with digital technology is proving that the traditional lecture hall is no longer the only path to success.
Previously, to start a business, young people had to face countless barriers, from capital and premises to personnel. Today, internet infrastructure and AI have simplified all processes, turning entrepreneurship into an experience that can be operated right from a bedroom at almost zero cost.
According to UOB's Business Outlook Report, up to 80% of businesses in Vietnam have integrated AI into their operational processes. This wave paves the way for ultra-lean business models such as Dropshipping or affiliate marketing to thrive. With just an internet-connected computer, young people can use generative AI tools to automate content writing, media image design, and basic programming without outsourcing to an expensive team. Organic reach algorithms on major social media platforms also help unique ideas directly reach millions of target customers without requiring a huge advertising budget.
Besides, today's young generation is creating new professions based on passion and technological acumen. A survey by the global auditing firm Deloitte across 44 countries indicates that up to one-third of Gen Z and Millennials choose to forgo higher education due to financial pressure or a desire to pursue freelance careers that do not require degrees.
Reality shows that many fields are generating outstanding income for young people without the need for a bachelor's degree as a guarantee.
Numerous content creators, podcasters, and streamers have built personal brands and profound influence. They generate substantial revenue from advertising contracts, sponsorships, and fan donations at a very young age. At the same time, mastering the online supply chain through global models also allows students to operate virtual fashion or home appliance stores, easily reaching international customer bases. According to a survey by Whop, over 50% of young people currently use the internet for the purpose of making money online rather than for pure entertainment.
Vietnam currently has over 4,000 tech startups. Many young founders have chosen to directly build practical applications or AI-integrated solutions to immediately solve market problems, instead of spending four years waiting for a theoretical degree.

This shift does not mean that universities have completely lost their value. Universities still play an important role in in-depth research, teaching specialized fields (such as medicine, law, core sciences...), and are places to build sustainable social networks. However, in the digital era, universities no longer hold a monopoly.
The modern labor market is shifting heavily from degree-based hiring to hiring based on practical competence, adaptability, and a problem-solving mindset. Statistics from Forbes indicate that up to 90% of businesses evaluate that skills-based hiring brings higher efficiency and minimizes errors better than merely looking at academic certificates. When knowledge can be updated for free and continuously via the internet, possessing a self-learning mindset combined with AI leverage is the master key that helps young people survive and break through.
