Why do humans like to start over?

Starting over, through the lens of evolutionary and cognitive psychology, is absolutely not a superficial impulse or a cowardly act of escaping reality. It is, in fact, a highly sophisticated survival defense mechanism of the mind, a privilege humans grant themselves to refuse being forever defined or imprisoned by the mistakes, brokenness, and blemishes of yesterday.

The root of this craving stems from a phenomenon researchers define as the "reset" psychology, whose core is the fresh start effect. The human mind possesses a profoundly unique mechanism of temporal compartmentalization and mental accounting, allowing us to pack all our failures, procrastination, and worst versions of ourselves into a closed drawer labeled "the past." By drawing a hypothetical boundary between the old day and the new, we essentially whitewash our own psychological records. This disconnection liberates us from the weight of self-judgment and persistent guilt.

When pressing the "reset" button, we implicitly agree with ourselves that our stumbles belong to the "self" of yesterday, while the "self" standing at today's starting line is an entirely new entity, pure, intact, and brimming with capability.

The fatal attraction of a "fresh start" lies entirely in one word: potential. A blank page, completely unstained by ink, always carries an extreme, magical allure, for it represents the boundlessness of possibilities. When things are yet to take shape, yet to be constrained by harsh realities and the eroding laws of time, humans are granted the freedom to nurture the most perfect expectations. A new beginning injects our veins with a dopamine hit of hope, awakening an intense sense of mastery over our destiny that old habits had obscured. It is the moment when the burden of shattered expectations is cast off, giving way to a sweet, exhilarating illusion that this time, with a new setting, new people, and a new resolve, everything will undoubtedly operate exactly along the ideal trajectory we have always desired.

However, the omnipresent tragedy of starting over is that people easily fall into a loop of illusion if they only focus on changing their outer shell while refusing to restructure their inner selves. You can move to another country, completely change your social circle, or jump into an entirely new career field, but if toxic thought patterns and unresolved traumas remain intact in your subconscious, "starting over" is merely a repetition of old failures against a new backdrop. A true and profound beginning does not demand the extreme demolition of all foundations or the erasure of memories. It demands the courage to confront, in order to distill hard-earned lessons from the ashes of the past.

Starting over the right way is when we carry the experiences of yesterday as a guiding compass, rather than letting them act as chains dragging down our footsteps, and profoundly understanding that: true renewal must be born from silent shifts within our perception, rather than just noisy movements in the external world.
