Single People
There are those who are single because they haven't found the right person yet. But there are also those who have been single for so long that loneliness has become a habit, silence has become a comfort zone, and the heart has gradually learned to heal itself without needing anyone by its side.
To outsiders, they often seem strong and free, unfettered by the ties of love. But in reality, behind that calm composure lies many different stories and hidden sorrows. Not everyone who is single for a long time lacks suitors; sometimes, it's because there is still someone in their heart they cannot forget, or someone they can never be with for a lifetime.
Some are single because they still cling to an old flame.
They don't speak of it, nor do they mention that person much anymore, but everything remains quietly tucked away in a deep corner of the heart. A familiar song, a cafe they once visited, an old message they haven't the heart to delete... it all becomes a lingering attachment. Perhaps they don't truly want to go back; it’s just that the heart hasn't learned how to let go completely. The deeper the feelings, the harder they are to forget; the more one tries to forget, the more one remembers. There are those who have been separated for a long time yet still silently care about the other’s life, quietly watching from afar, seeking them in familiar corners but never daring to appear before them again.
Because they still carry a ghost of the past, they are unwilling to open their hearts to someone new. It’s not that the newcomer isn’t good enough, but because they fear starting over from the beginning. They fear gambling once more only to end up with nothing but hurt; they fear getting used to someone only to lose them; they fear investing feelings in someone only to be left alone in the end. Those who have been single for too long sometimes lose their faith in love; they become cautious with their own emotions.
Others are single because they are secretly in love with someone.
It is a very quiet and helpless kind of affection. They love someone but cannot walk by their side. Perhaps they don’t belong together, perhaps the timing was wrong, or simply, the other person never felt the same way. They choose to be friends, choose to stand behind, and choose to watch their loved one find happiness in a different way.
Those in unrequited love often carry many unspoken words. They tell themselves to let go, but feelings aren't something you can just discard at will. Some hold onto a shadow for years - not out of stubbornness, but because their heart hasn't truly resonated with anyone else, or perhaps they carry an invisible attachment and fear that leaving means missing out. So they remain single forever, not for lack of pursuers, but because someone has already taken up all the space in their heart.
And then there are those who are single in a very gentle way.
Not because of anyone, and not because of any great trauma. They have simply grown accustomed to their current life - a life with work, family, friends, personal hobbies, and just enough peace. They live more for themselves, spending time caring for family, pursuing passions, and enjoying freedom without feeling a void where love should be.
This type of person doesn't hate romance; they just no longer see love as a requirement. If they meet the right person, they can still open up; if not, that’s fine too. Alone but not lonely. Single but still happy. They understand that happiness doesn't necessarily come from having someone by their side; sometimes, inner peace is enough. Contentment is enough for those who feel content; there is no need to chase after others, thinking that because they have it, I must have it too - for what they have may not be what truly makes them happy.
