In recent years, studying abroad has become a goal for many Vietnamese families. Many believe that studying in an international environment not only provides access to advanced education but also broadens career opportunities, increases income, and even changes the future. Therefore, an increasing number of parents are willing to invest in their children studying overseas, while young people also consider studying abroad as one of the options worth considering after graduating from high school.

One of the most important issues, alongside the choice of school, major, or country, is financial capability, which always requires the utmost attention. Many families only care about tuition fees, forgetting that study abroad expenses also include accommodation, food, insurance, transportation, textbooks, and many other incurred costs. So, on average, how much money needs to be prepared?

Below is the average cost for one academic year (including tuition and living expenses) in some popular countries: Average cost/year (VND)

·         South Korea: Around 350 - 700 million

·         China: Around 250 - 500 million

·         Taiwan: Around 250 - 450 million

·         Germany: Around 250 - 500 million (most public universities offer free or very low tuition, mostly covering living expenses)

·         Canada: Around 500 million - 1 billion

·         Australia: Around 700 million - 1.3 billion

·         UK: Around 800 million - 1.4 billion

·         US: Around 1 - 1.8 billion

If pursuing a bachelor's degree lasting 3 - 4 years, the total cost can range from:

·         South Korea, China, Taiwan, Germany: 1 - 2 billion VND.

·         Canada: 2 - 4 billion VND.

·         Australia, UK: 2.5 - 5 billion VND.

·         US: 3 - 7 billion VND, depending on the school and state.

Of course, these are just average figures. In reality, costs can be significantly reduced if the student receives scholarships, chooses public universities, lives in cities with a lower cost of living, or works part-time in accordance with the host country's regulations. Conversely, studying at prestigious universities or in major cities can cause the total cost to increase significantly.

To ensure children can study abroad with peace of mind, families should prepare a minimum financial source of about 300 - 500 million VND/year for low-cost countries and from 700 million to over 1 billion VND/year for countries like the US, UK, Australia, or Canada. Besides financial capability, planning early, researching scholarships, and choosing a country that suits the family's conditions will help reduce cost pressures and increase the chances of success on the study abroad journey.
