Does Love Need Material Wealth?

Love has long been idealized as a pure emotion, without calculation or ulterior motives. But when stepping into reality, the question “does love need material things?” leaves many wondering. Some argue that mentioning money in love is materialistic and exploitative. Yet others believe that without a material foundation, love can hardly last. So where is the boundary between genuine love and conditional love?

Material things in love are often easily viewed negatively. When a person cares about the finances, gifts, or economic capacity of their partner, they can be labeled a “gold digger” or an opportunist. However, not every concern for material things is self-serving. Because material things are not just money, but also a way people show care and responsibility. A small gift, a meal, or simply sharing living expenses - all are very everyday expressions of love.

So are gifts in love voluntary or mandatory? In reality, a gift only holds meaning when it stems from voluntariness and sincerity. When it becomes an obligation, measured or compared, its spiritual value gradually disappears. Many people fall into feelings of inferiority when they cannot meet their partner's material expectations, or conversely, jealousy when seeing others receive more. At that point, love is no longer an emotional connection, but becomes a stressful unspoken comparison.

It is undeniable that love cannot be completely separated from material factors. A relationship that wants to go far needs to face many practical issues: living expenses, the future, family, children... If there is only affection but a lack of economic stability, both can easily fall into stress, conflict, and exhaustion. Love can help people overcome difficulties, but it cannot entirely replace the essential needs of life. Therefore, saying “love does not need material things” is a beautiful but insufficiently realistic thought.

The important thing lies in balance. Material wealth should be a means to support and nurture love, not a metric to evaluate affection. A person who loves you for your money will leave when you are no longer able to provide. But a genuine person will build, share, and strive with you so that both can have a better life. Then, material things are no longer a burden, but become the result of companionship.

Love cannot rely solely on material things, but it is also hard to last if completely lacking them. The core issue is not “whether material things are needed,” but how people perceive and utilize them in love. When material wealth is accompanied by sincerity, respect, and empathy, love will not be tarnished; instead, it will have a stronger foundation for long-term growth.
